Calla Lily Festivals
Considering the calla lily is such a lovely flower, it was a surprise to me intially that there were no festivals or celebrations of this elegant flower anywhere nearby. I've since come to find a couple of places around the world that celebrate the symbolism of 'birth and rebirth' most connected to the calla lily, and I share them here for your pleasure. If you know of any more, can you please send me a message and a link to the site on my contact page? Thanks!
Taiwan Calla Lily Festival
This annual Calla Lily Festival attracts people from all over Taiwan and now from around the world each spring in March and April. The scenes are idyllic and to experience the vast panoramas, you need to travel to Yangmingshan National Park. From this location, it’s easy to find shuttle buses to Jhuzihu. By chance if you're not sure where to go, as soon as you see someone carrying a bunch of lilies, you'll know that you're getting close and people will be eager to help you find your way. It's not very far from this point to the calla lily fields and after only about 15 minutes on the shuttle bus you will be ready to pick an armful of lovely calla lilies for your vases at home. The 2015 Calla Lily Festival will kick-off on March 20 at the Zhuzihu area on Yangmingshan. Here's a link for more information.
Wild Calla Lily Grove in Big Sur, California
You might have seen some of the beautiful photos online of this magical place close to the sea. Here is a vista of wild calla lilies and if you're up for an adventure or a photography buff, an exploration here is a must. About the park (from parks.gov): "The park has two miles of beach front, with coastal hiking and a 50-foot climb to a beautiful view of the Pacific. The park offers diverse coastal vegetation with trails running from ocean beaches into dense redwood groves. The park also features outstanding coastal headlands at Soberanes Point. Sea lions, harbor seals and sea otters frequent the coastal waters and California gray whales pass close by during their yearly migration." The address: 26374 Cabrillo Hwy, Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA 93923. I'm including a photo here so you can see just how tremendously magical this space is when the lilies are in bloom. Photo Source
Any Other Calla Lily Festivals?
Even if the festival you know of is small or local, I would love to add it. Flower celebrations are found all over the world and attended by great numbers of home gardeners and horticulturists alike. Also are a great way to find unique varieties of your favorites. Please be in touch.
